Volta, Electra's Freezer Truck - the Ice Queen!

Halloween 2008, tho this costume has been ticking away in the back of my mind for a long while. Electra has 5 components, and now I have made costumes for all six characters.

I've attempted Volta twice before, but never been happy with the results. Along with futuristic Electra and Sexypurse, I wanted to make a costume that was unquestionably Volta, yet also slightly different to the existing costumes. The later London designs were very dark -not great for a detailed stage costume as the costume disappears. I also don't love the chaps of the German version, guaranteed to make anyone's butt look twice the size it is. So I based this costume on John Napier's design for the re-imagined Broadway costume, with the panelled grey leotard rather than silver transfers on black. I made the hip fins part of the leggings rather than separate chaps, as with the later London costumes. They were the hardest part of the costume to make, along with the wig. We did have to forfeit the visor of the original design - how could you put the eyelashes under it?

The wig consists of a long, silky black wig which was separated into three sections - top front was swept up and braided, the braid coiled and sewn into place, under the hat. The back right was swept around the back, sewn into place to keep it as smooth and even as possible, then braided (long wig) and that braid coiled and forms the anchor for the fan. The fan is made from a bunch of kanekalon extension hair, ironed, hairsprayed, painted, glued, glittered, sprayed, and finally cut into shape. That was then pinned into the base, and the final section of hair, from the left, coiled around the base of the fan twice with the ends tucked into the back of the fan, all pinned and hairsprayed into place. Then the fringe is just a lock of the blue hair, glued to a hairgrip, and pinned and glittered. simple, really.

Photo taken on Halloween - the costume was first worn by Rach the weekend before at MCM Expo London, but none of the solo photos of her came out so well so we did more.
